What is the Montessori Method?

Maria Montessori, the founder of the Montessori method, identified key stages in a child’s development known as sensitive periods – times  when children are naturally driven to absorb certain skills and knowledge. She designed hands-on materials that empower children to teach themselves through exploration and discovery.

Practical Life

practical life  activities help refine fine motor skills, dexterity, and coordination – supporting a child’s independence and ability to participate in everyday life. Children engage in meaningful, real-world tasks such as folding, pouring, sweeping, spooning, tonging, and washing. These activities not only build physical skills but also strengthen Concentration, attention span, and a sense of responsibility.

Sensoral

Sensorial work helps children refine and sharpen their senses – visual, tactile, baric (weight), thermic (temperature), auditory, olfactory (smell), gustatory (taste), and stereognostic (touch and movement combined). Through carefully designed activities that isolate one or two senses at a time, children learn to recognize, compare, and classify different qualities and intensities within each sense.

Language

Language  development follows each child’s individual pace, beginning with a strong focus on letter sounds (phonetics). Once confident with sounds, children begin blending them to form words, which naturally leads to reading.

Mathematics

The Montessori approach to mathematics introduces both the metric and imperial systems, guiding children through place value up to the thousands. Learning begins with hands-on exploration of quantity and number symbols, building a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. As they progress, children work with both static and dynamic operations in arithmetic, laying a strong foundation for abstract thinking.
